Trans women need help

Words have always fascinated me — their origins, their ever-evolving meanings, and so forth. Naturally, as a trans woman of a certain persuasion*, I’ve also long been exposed to so many interesting words that few English-speakers will ever come across: honfidence, repfuel, John 50.

This is an essay (and an assay) in providing some sort of linguistic and ethnological commentary and documentation for a word that has had an interesting semantic trend among the English-speaking trans population: sneedhon and its back-derivative sneed. I’d like to talk about this word’s history, but I’d also like to discuss what we can learn from this word, and to do so in a way that doesn’t belittle trans women. The mainstream view of what is unfortunately (perhaps erroneously) labelled ‘4tran culture’ is highly uncharitable; it is my hope that, as someone who was an insider during the period that I consider to be the peak of activity on 4chan’s /lgbt/ board, I can provide a much more thorough review of this turbulent moment of trans history as it is happening.

The Word

Sneedhon is a compound noun comprised of sneed and hon. I fronted this section with Wiktionary’s etymology for sneed to immediately dispel the folk etymology, held by certain types of people, that sneed is a portmanteau of special needs. Sneed is simply a shibboleth derived from a Simpson’s joke; it has no connotations of ableism.

Many people’s first introduction to sneedhon will have been on Twitter. The lexicographers of Wiktionary list their earliest attestation of the word here, in a Reddit thread posted by a user who goes by the usernames kirbizia and kirnixis on Reddit and Twitter, respectively, and kirnixis on YouTube. The subject of the thread is a screenshot of a list of nonce words, and the thread’s discussion revolves around inventing meanings for these words. According to the title of the thread, some of those words were coined by kirbizia, but I have been unable to verify which ones she had come up with.

Feeling quite unsatisfied by Wiktionary’s noble efforts, I searched the /lgbt/ archives for examples of sneedhon, the earliest of which is the following post, dated April 2021. This single word sitting alone amongst the dark-mode UI has a somewhat ominous quality to it.

You can read the thread from which this originates here; it isn’t terribly interesting, and the most we can glean from the anon’s meaning is that it’s a silly word that sounds silly. Examples from around the same time period refer back to that old Simpson’s joke:

A Problem With Internet Lexicography

Before I move on, I would like to briefly address a glaring issue with our ability to track the usage of words in a given online subculture. The issue is Discord.

Discord, in my mind, is analogous to letters (the things that you put in envelopes). A great deal of written discourse takes place via the medium of Discord, and yet (barring some kind of revolutionary change in how information is managed and distributed) so much of that data is and always will be inaccessible to linguists. There is always a chance that sneedhon emerged on some obscure Discord server before appearing on /lgbt/ in 2021. We currently have no way of knowing, unfortunately.

Discord and /lgbt/ have had an interesting relationship over the years. /lgbt/ users have often treated the board as a sort of canonical source, but in truth both platforms have existed in parallel to each other for a long time. We can only access the archives of /lgbt/ — we don’t have access to the various Discord servers that lived alongside and often influenced /lgbt/ — so the archived posts of the board inevitably take precedence over data from Discord.

The platforms of Reddit and Twitter further complicate things, not in the least because Twitter’s search function was deprecated when Elon Musk transformed the platform into Xitter. /lgbt/, for better or worse, is the most searchable of these platforms.

In summary: we have a lot of data, and not all of it can be easily obtained or even discovered at all. What we can easily access is only a snapshot of online written communication between (in the main) trans women in the era of Web 2.0.

Semantic Development #1

At some point over the course of 2023, sneedhon acquires new meaning: an archetype of a naïve trans woman with ill presentation, lacking in self-awareness. Before the existence of sneedhon, people would have referred to this archetype as a ‘Reddit trans woman,’ largely because the most notorious examples of shamelessly unkempt trans women originate from screenshots of Reddit posts.

I quite like this thread from the beginning of 2023. At this time, sneedhon as a nonce word is still very much the accepted meaning.

Only a week later, there’s a thread containing a brief discussion of sneedhon, which is described as a ‘new’ word belonging to board culture:

Over the year, the new meaning of sneedhon gradually solidifies. In the search results, we see posts that have the old meaning (combining gigapassoid with sneedhon reads as nonsensical) alongside posts that have the new meaning:

By the end of 2023, it seems that the new meaning of sneedhon — ‘a trans woman characterised by naïveté’ — has solidified:

I imagine that a great deal of this semantic shift has occurred on Discord and Xitter; the /lgbt/ archive is only a small slice of this development, and it’s a shame that the forces of enshittification have made it hard to get a more holistic view of the change in the meaning of sneedhon.

Semantic Development #2

Two years after the new meaning of sneedhon solidifies in 2023, a somewhat rarer derivative, sneedpoon, emerges:

Sneedpoon takes sneedhon and combines it with pooner, which is the analogous form of hon for trans men.

This anon was particularly upset.

Semantic Development #3

Now that sneedhon has taken on a concrete meaning, speakers have back-derived the word sneed, which is often used in the plural form (‘the sneeds’).

The meaning of sneed has crystallised into naïveté, lack of awareness of self, cringe. While once upon a time a sneedhon would likely have possessed masculine bodily traits, this may no longer be the case, as indicated in the first example below.

‘The Sneeds’ appears to now be a kind of clique, described from the outside. This is where things get a touch ethnological.

The Sneeds

The thing about the Sneed clique is that one can imagine exactly the sort of person who falls within it, but it’s much harder to describe succinctly. I would say these are some of the aesthetic elements of the Sneed archetype: pride flags; black lipstick; Tumblr, Reddit and Bluesky; gock; mouthfeel; skirt go spinny.

But there is more to the Sneeds than how they dress and behave. In cyberspace, how the Sneeds think is perhaps their most visibile aspect. In a post from July 2026 titled the sneedification of 4tran, one anon complained of an apparent encroachment of Sneeds into the territory of /lgbt/, and commented on the Sneed worldview:

I must say I’m not sure if I agree with this anon’s assessment that the board is soon to be ‘100% sneed’. Ironically, calling it 4tran as opposed to the more traditional tttt smells New to me, which only goes to show that /lgbt/ has always been changing.

Nevertheless, I think this anon has summarised Sneedism quite well. Gender over sex; anti-DIY; Tumblrite; gender is an essence. I think certain trans readers will largely agree that these constitute Sneedism, at least in part.

Not everyone who comes across this essay will be a trans woman of the same persuasion as I, however. There is a pervasive attitude within the online population (not just among trans people, or even LGBT people) that the jargon that arose from /lgbt/, and from its users on other platforms, is morally wrong. Earlier this year, I explained in roughly 3,000 words why this view is reactionary and unscientific.

As a linguist I’m less interested in whether it is Right or Wrong to refer to annoying people as ‘the sneeds’, because morality is a useless abstraction. What really interests me is why sneed in its current usage exists in the first place.

What the haters of /lgbt/ jargon so often fail to understand is that language is not a moral spectre but rather a tool (it’s among humanity’s oldest tools, in fact). Words exist solely because people find them useful. What does it say about the current moment in LGBT history that there is a word for LGBT people with a very specific mindset? I think in order to properly discuss that question, we need to name and describe the mindset which is usually attributed to /lgbt/.

The Moders

Over the course of this decade there has perhaps been nothing more iconic for the /lgbt/ board than the Boymoder character. Boymoder is the mascot of /lgbt/. She is a trans woman who takes HRT but through circumstance has no choice but to dress as a male; she is in boymode.

The fact that Boymoder arose as the mascot of /lgbt/ should tell you something about that board. Boymoding is not a fun thing to do. Trans women do not usually boymode for a lark. Wearing hoodies in hot weather is uncomfortable; being referred to as ‘he’ all the time is humiliating, demoralising, dysphoria-inducing.

A trans woman will choose to boymode for one of two reasons: (1) She cannot come out as trans to the people in her household; (2) She is not confident in her ability to Pass.

Passing as a concept has always been controversial among trans women, even as far back as those halcyon days of Susan’s Place, that accursed website that spawned the word hon. That controversy has obviously never gone away; I identify Passing as the crux of the antagonism between Sneeds and Moders. Sneeds do not care about Passing, because they believe gender to be declarative; one merely has to say that she is a woman and now she is one, haters be damned.

Moders, on the other hand, care very much about Passing. Moders have very intense dysphoria—anatomical and social—and this colours the way they live their lives. For a Moder, it is less painful (though still excruciating) to be viewed by others as a man than it is to be viewed by others as a trans woman. Moders want to be viewed simply as women—with no extra baggage—by the people around them and by themselves. The Moder wants to look in the mirror and see the woman she has always longed to see—she does not want to see a feminised version of her post-pubertal self.

The stark difference in worldviews between the Sneeds and the Moders is interesting, and, as always, it is entirely a product of the material conditions (that’s ‘lived experience’ in liberal academese) of different kinds of trans people. While the exact ontology of transness is an open question, it is an observable reality that there are different kinds of trans people—there are trans women and trans men; there are nonbinary people; there are trans people with varying levels of dysphoria over a variety of bodily traits; there are those who want to alter their genitals and those who don’t.

The thing that leads a trans person to be a Sneed is simple, then: the intensity of dysphoria. There are a variety of factors that can affect that intensity:

• Transitioning young—averts the more severe effects of an incongruous puberty, leading to less dysphoria in adulthood

• Being rich—medical technology is getting to a point where the human body is very customisable, which is excellent news for inheritors who happen to be trans

• Natural mental resilience—our childhoods and neurotypes shape our ability to handle emotional pain; some people are just more inclined to have a higher emotional pain tolerance

• Just not having dysphoria—for whatever reason, some people consider themselves to be trans while having little to no problem with their existing sex characteristics

This is why the Sneeds appear to be a motley crew of young transitioners, Gen X job havers, so-called theyfabs and theymabs, orange TikTok millionaires, and Onlyfans rentiers. On the other hand, Moders are overwhelmingly trans women living in poverty.

Ontologically Proletarian

The thing about being poor is it really puts a dampener on your ability to Pass. Surgery is very expensive, and most Moders desperately want more than one procedure.

The thing about being dysphoric, autistic and ugly is that it really puts a dampener on your employment and education prospects. Even if you truly want to get a degree and get a job that pays enough to fund your surgeries, there is sometimes nothing you can do against the overwhelming might of hiring discrimination, executive dysfunction, trauma, crippling anxiety brought about by constant dysphoria, and an absence of familial support. You try, you fail. You try again, you fail. You try a third time, and you fail so hard you lose your chance of accessing further attempts. Despondent, you go on your phone and see that the Sneeds are discussing why the healthcare you’ve desperately wanted since you were 15 is actually racist.

That’s essentially the situation most Moders find themselves in. They need surgery to ease their dysphoria and present as the women they’ve always wanted to be, but society has decided that their healthcare is cosmetic, and the LGBT community has abandoned them for not being blindly optimistic about a life that has done nothing but shit on them.

I don’t think the normies and the Sneeds and the people who aren’t trans women really understand just how bleak it is to be a working class trans woman. We are addicted to drugs. We are homeless. We are trying to commit suicide. We are living in fear of being deported to our country of birth. We are being chased by loansharks. We are wishing we were born in the after-times where trans people get to have healthcare. We are cutting ourselves. We are passing the time until advanced old age comes to take us away from this world of pain that we never asked for.

The situation that Moders find themselves in is not something that one simply grows out of. Trans women in particular are being failed by society in all aspects: healthcare, employment, family, housing, education, justice. You can’t exactly walk off being unqualified, orphaned, homeless, unemployed, mentally disabled, and forcefully trapped in a body that tortures you, yet this is what the Sneeds seem to expect of the Moders.

The Sneed worldview is, in a word, immature. Sneedism takes the position that the mind exists independent of external stimuli, that a ‘mindset’ can be simply changed on a whim, that sex is an unchanging artefact independent of gender, that the institutions of medicine and academia should be blindly trusted and obeyed.

The Moder worldview, on the other hand, is refreshingly materialist. Sex and gender aren’t quite so distinct; they’re tangled up together, influenced by the perception of others, and changeable via medicine. Dysphoria can be treated with healthcare, but doctors serve their own class interests and are highly untrustworthy. The so-called ‘gender theorists’ of the intelligentsia are all outsiders who view trans women as tools for furthering their academic careers. The mind does not exist independent of the world around it.

Though they skew young, Moders are not immature. They are human beings who have been forced into insanely deprived situations, and they’re being told by their supposed siblings-in-arms that they need to shut up about their very real, very painful oppression. In response, Moders have created a community for themselves with its own language. Sneed is, I think, a useful word for pushing back against a quite insidious ideological tendency within the LGBT community that accepts the torture of trans women as a normal and respectable state of affairs. I think we can expect to see great things from sneed.

What concerns me, really, is that there is no movement towards improving the lives of trans women. For 26 years internationally the conversation has been dominated by minor gains and losses in legal recognition. Absolutely nothing has been done to secure healthcare for trans people as a whole, and in fact we’ve largely slid back from the position we had at the turn of the Century. There does not seem to be any hope for improvement in the lives of myself and those around me. Crippling dysphoria without treatment has become the nature of life for us, and that is a monstrous reality.
